Many people get anxiety and suffer from fear about the problems they are facing and the unknown future that often seems so dark. While some don’t have anxiety in the extreme, every one of us has upon occasion taken to fretting about things that may happen in the future and worrying about things that they cannot control.
One powerful solution is to create an affirmation for yourself, a powerfully short statement of absolute truth that you can repeat to yourself when you are tempted to worry and fret.
Your affirmation should speak directly to the things you are worried about, speaking life-giving, positive reinforcement to who you are and what you are all about. Sometimes I use scripture as an affirmation, other times I just write my own.
Worried about money? Affirmation: Money will not be my master. I will use money to buy supplies, but i will not rely upon money to validate who I am. I have value apart from what I owe. Scripture says “My God will supply all my needs, according to His riches and glory” so I will rely upon God to provide.
Worried about Death? Affirmation: Everyone dies, but not everyone lives. I will live every day as though it is my last. Filling it with love, energy, passion. Today I will praise others, speak love to those nearest to me, and I will not withhold any good word. I will leave a legacy, no matter how long I have to live, starting today.
Kicking yourself over past mistakes? Affirmation: I will not be defined by my lowest moment or my biggest mistakes. I will use my pain to help others and to learn to create a better life for myself and others. When others make mistakes, I will be quick to forgive, knowing how hard it is to forgive myself and how important grace is to me. I am a new creature in Jesus and not held back by the mistakes of yesterday.
You can quickly see how easy, but powerful it is to write an affirmation. Write an affirmation about the fears you feel, and then read them to yourself regularly, until you begin to internalize it.
