Can you write a biography of a city? Simon Sebag Montefiore did, and it’s terrific. Jerusalem – a Biography, is a book that takes us througth the birth, and lifespan of this hugely important city to world history. While the author walk us chronologically through time, he also punctuates the storyline with the characters, both fantastic and horrific, that have helped to shape the city of Jerusalem. It makes for interesting readin for anyone who ever wondered why jerusalem has historical importance, why Islam, Christianity and Judaism fight over the city, and why it matters to the future.
Montefiore, from a Jewish family, nevertheless doesn’t seem to write from a religious perspective and no doubt people from all faiths will be disappointed that he doesn’t promote their own specific claims or viewpoints. This isn’t a book for people who are looking for proof of their point of view. This is however, a fascinating book on some of the historical development of the city of Jerusalem. I recommend it to people interested in history.
