Rare is the week I’m not asked about fundraising, the importance of charitable giving, car donations and the like. Usually the question goes something like this: “How can I get people to give to my cause?”
Here’s the thing, You don’t want PEOPLE to give to your cause, you want people who are passionate about your cause to give. The distinction is important. Gone are the days when charities put an add in the paper and wait for the dollars to roll in (if those days ever existed). Instead, focusing on relationship with your donors and connecting people with their passion is the path to sustainability and authenticity as well.
But what about the donor? What is your responsibility in shaping charitable giving? Pouring your heart into the charity you love, going deep into volunteerism, supporting resources and connecting with the staff is the only way to go. There’s no fun and limited impact in spreading your limited resources across charities you have minimal excitement about. Find what you are passionate about, find the cause that seems essential to you, and pour your heart into it.
What causes are you passionate about? How can we help connect people with their passion?
